FCDA defender Vernon Bailey headed to Bradenton

FC Dallas Academy defender Vernon Bailey has been selected to take part in Wilmer Cabrera’s U.S. Soccer Under-17 Residency Program for the fall semester of 2011. Bailey left for Bradenton, Fla. last weekend to take part in the national training program that has produced USMNT players Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu and FC Dallas’ own Brek Shea, just to name a few. Bailey follows in the footsteps of Academy defender Kellyn Acosta and midfielder Fernando Laverde, both of whom graduated from the Residency Program at Bradenton last spring.

USSF evaluates and grades the Development Academy teams

...the most common grades on Player Development (PD) and Style of Player are 2 to 3 stars, with a handful of 3 1/2s. The highest ratings given in those two categories were 4s, which FC Dallas got in both, Real Salt Lake in Style and the New York Red Bulls in PD. (D.C. United rated 3 1/2 in both categories, ranking it second-highest in those two categories combined behind FC Dallas.)

Dallas Texans U-15/16 team leads the Texas Division with a 6-0-2 record, and all of their games have been divisional matches. Of the teams that have played more than 10 games in the 2011-12 Development Academy's under-17/18 age group, FC Dallas Juniors has the best record with a 11-1-2 mark. Dallas is led by Danny Garcia, who has 13 goals in 13 games and earned a call-up to the U.S. under-20 national team's first domestic camp under its new coach, Tab Ramos. FC Dallas has been the most prolific club about handing out home-grown contracts to academy players -- six have graduated to the first team -- but Garcia has made a verbal commitment to attend 2011 NCAA Division I champion North Carolina.

Interesting move which should help development of Academy players further, although it makes their academy vs. high school decision even tougher.

U.S. Development Academy switches to 10-month format

U.S. Soccer has taken a giant step in altering the growth and development of the country's elite youth prospects by making a major change to the annual structure of the U.S. Development Academy. Starting in September, the U.S. Development Academy will operate on a 10-month schedule, mimicking the development systems of nations around the world. The new system creates a situation where players will be training multiple times a week and playing games over an extended, stretched-out period of time as opposed to the current format that had a shorter, more compressed schedule that limited growth and development. "If we want our players to someday compete against the best in the world, it is critical for their development that they train and play as much as possible and in the right environment," U.S. men's national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a federation statement. Klinsmann, one of the bigger proponents of restucturing the youth system, is a major backer of the initiative, which has already begun with clubs in the Western Conference and Texas Division before becoming an all-encompassing venture this week. "This is the model that the best countries around the world use for their programs, and I think it makes perfect sense that we do as well," Klinsmann said. One of the byproducts of the new system is that high school-age players will have to decide between either playing for their schools or playing in the academy system, as taking part in both won't be an option under the new format.
