“Without Lamar and Clark Hunt, there wouldn’t be soccer in America, and
there certainly wouldn’t have been the Kansas City Wizards,” Garber
says. “But because they didn’t live in the community, it was difficult
to get them to apply the resources and the time to be able to deliver
some of the things this ownership group has been able to deliver.”

“I think Frank will go back. I’m quite sure. I hope I don’t say too
much, but I’m quite sure he likes to go back to Germany. I haven’t
talked to him yet, but I guess it is like that,’’ said Backe, who’ll
conduct exit interviews with a number of players later this week, Rost
included.

This may explain things...

As Gary Smith discussed his ousting as head coach of the Colorado
Rapids after three seasons, one word that came up over and over again
was "respect," or, in Smith's mind, the lack of it. But as the
Englishman elaborated, a deeper issue emerged -- namely, power.

Everyone
connected with the Rapids organization has said publicly that Smith had
the final say on personnel matters. But according to Smith, his
authority in this area had steadily eroded. His previous public comments
had indicated his disagreements lay primarily with technical director
Paul Bravo. But now that he has been let go, Smith said that the problem
extended to general manager Jeff Plush and, rather bizarrely, chief
marketing officer Tim Hinchey, with all three having an increased role
in the construction of the roster.

“I’m gay, I’m gay. I have no choice. It’s just part of who I am. And it
has nothing to do with the talent of a soccer player. You can be both an
excellent soccer player and being gay,” Testo said as translated
through Google.

Following the departure of longtime coach coach Steve Nicol, the New England Revolution's owners, Robert and Jonathan Kraft, have turned to the club's front office to make changes. U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati has been replaced as Revolution president by Brian Bilello, the club's chief operating officer the last six years, and Michael Burns is the new general manager.

Gulati had joined Kraft Soccer in 1999 following his exit as MLS deputy
commissioner. He became U.S. soccer vice president in 2002 and
president in 2006. He'll remain as a special advisor to the Revs and
Krafts.

Gonzalez, who turned 23 last month, edged out previous winners Eddie Pope, Carlos Bocanegra, Bobby Boswell and Michael Parkhurst as the youngest player to win the award.

He beat out Jamison Olave, the 2010 winner, and Olave's Real Salt Lake teammate, Nat Borchers, for the award. First-year Colombian Carlos Valdes (Philadelphia) was fourth in the voting, and Todd Dunivant, the Galaxy left back, was fifth.

The annual MLS State of the League audio conference, held prior to the
MLS Cup, is usually good for some news and gossip from the MLS league
office. This year’s conference was no different, as The Commish touched
on the hot topics of expansion and relocation, as well as more nuts and
bolts like life with 19 teams.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber says [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
might relocate to a different site in the Washington-Baltimore region next
season because of high operating costs at RFK Stadium.

“We have to aggressively figure a solution out, and that solution needs to
be figured out soon. And I am concerned about where this team will be in 2012,”
he said during a conference call Thursday.

“I’m shocked to say that I believe they could be paying more for their
lease in RFK than any other team we have in the league, and there is no doubt in
my mind that it is a stadium that is substandard to what soccer fans are able to
experience in many other markets in the United States and Canada.”

“I certainly hope to have him back,” said Garber of discussions among
Beckham, his representatives, MLS, and AEG amid offers from foreign
teams ranging from Xolos in Tijuana to Paris St. Germain in France.
“David has delivered for us on all aspects beyond our expectations, on
and off the field. David had a terrific year this year. It’s hard to
argue that he wasn’t one of the more important players on our fields and
really contributed to his team and the league.

“Lastly, I have
to say MLS wouldn’t be what it is today if David didn’t decide in 2007
to come play in Major League Soccer. All of us appreciate everything
that he’s done. It hasn’t been perfect, I don’t think any relationship
is ever perfect. Certainly there are things we might have done a little
differently, but all in all it’s been really a big success.”

The 36-year-old midfielder has enjoyed an MVP-caliber season,
battling back from a potentially career-ending Achilles injury that cost
Beckham a spot on England's 2010 World Cup spot and caused him to miss
six months of the 2010 MLS season. Whereas in 2010, Beckham struggled
with injuries, in 2011, Beckham was the catalyst for a stellar Galaxy
midfield that will take part in MLS Cup against the Houston Dynamo on
November 20th at the Home Depot Center.

Beckham finished the season with 26 appearances, tallying 15 assists
(second most in MLS) and two goals. The award is added to a list of
accolades for Beckham, who was also awarded with an MLS Best XI
selection as well as his second career All-Star selection earlier in the
season.

Arena is the first in league history to win the Coach of the Year honor
three times as Arena won the award in 1997 as head coach of D.C. United
and in 2009 with the Galaxy. Since taking over as Galaxy manager in
2009, Arena has been instrumental in returning Los Angeles to the
upper echelon in MLS, going 51-23-30 in regular season contests.

The Galaxy has reached a broadcast agreement to jump from Fox Sports
West to Time Warner Cable’s fledgling regional sports channels –- one in
English, one in Spanish.

The 10-year deal is valued at $55 million for an undetermined number
of the games. The Galaxy said it will lose money this season despite
advancing to Sunday’s Major League Soccer championship game with the
league’s best record.

The value of the regional contract dwarfs the three-year, $30-million contract between MLS and NBC.

Real Salt Lake's Kyle Beckerman and the Columbus Crew's Robbie Rogers
have had training stints arranged with Bundesliga club Kaiserslautern
by U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, joining the growing
movement of MLS players getting training experience with top-flight
European clubs.

They're not the only ones getting Bundesliga experience, either.

D.C. United's Perry Kitchen, coming off a strong rookie season and an
invite to the just-concluded U.S. Under-23 national team camp that was
held in Duisburg, Germany, will train with SC Freiburg for the next
week, sources told SBI.
