| Soccer America: Omar Gonzalez gets his chance, finally - Quote :
- The U.S. back line is the area where the need of replacements is most
dire, and in naming seven defenders to the roster for a two and a half-week training camp and friendlies against Venezuela and Panama head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has gone beyond the usual suspects.

| New York Times: Roster rumblings and ramblings - Quote :
- Klinsmann’s seven-man defensive unit includes the 2011 M.L.S.
Defender of the Year, Omar Gonzalez; the Houston Dynamo’s Cameron; and George John, who anchors the Dallas defense and almost moved to Blackburn earlier this year. Any of these bulky back-liners would look good alongside Carlos Bocanegra in the center of the American defense.
The other four defenders — DeLaGarza, Zach Loyd, Parkhurst and Pearce — are all relatively young and have significant upside, and collectively this group gives you the feeling that Tim Howard and the back four could be an area of strength for the U.S. in the years ahead.
If the potential upside of the defensive unit gives U.S. supporters a bit of a lift, the same cannot be said for the midfield Klinsmann selected. Aside from Brek Shea, who is already a first-choice starter for the national team, and Graham Zusi, who had a breakout year for Kansas City, the midfield options on this squad do not inspire much excitement.

| New York Times Player Ratings: U.S. vs. Venezuela [R] - Quote :
- Brek Shea: The wiry winger got off to a sluggish
start but nearly scored in the 20th minute off a Feilhaber pass that sent him in on goal. Three minutes later Shea almost struck again when he headed a Zusi free kick toward the far corner of the goal. But Venezuela goalkeeper Jose Morales made the first of several sparkling saves and kept Shea off the score sheet. The 21-year-old Texan showed flashes of brilliance – he was clearly one of the most talented players on the field — but also disappeared for long stretches. Rating: 6
Zach Loyd: Loyd came on in the 74th minute and delivered a fantastic cross to Wondolowski that woulda-coulda-shoulda put the U.S. in front but Morales made a brilliant stop. Rating: 6

| Soccer America: Player ratings, Panama vs. U.S. [R] - Quote :
- 5 Zach Loyd (FC Dallas)
3/0. Overlapped down the left flank in first stage of match and delivered two dangerous, right-footed balls, one of which produced the USA goal. Replaced late in the first half after being overrun a few times.
3 Brek Shea (FC Dallas) 11/0. Started well enough by tucking inside to play combinations as Loyd overlapped but then disappeared offensively. Put in some resolute defensive work and managed to last the full 90, barely.
