- U.S. Soccer [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for the 99th edition of the tournament. Those changes include a 64-team field (the largest in the modern era), a random selection process for determining home teams from the opening round until the quarterfinals, and the inclusion of all professional teams from the top three divisions, meaning the MLS qualifying bracket is no more.
The Division 1 field will include all 16 U.S.-based MLS clubs, while all six U.S.-based NASL teams and all 10 U.S.-based USL Pro sides are also included. This marks the first time that NASL clubs will participate in America's oldest national soccer tournament. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Here is the slated schedule for this year's U.S. Open Cup:
April 29: Qualifying deadline
May 15: First Round
May 22: Second Round
May 29: Third Round
June 5: Fourth Round
June 26: Quarterfinals
July 10: Semifinals
Aug. 7 or 8: Final | |

| I really like this format. I didn't like that the lower-ranked MLS teams from the previous season had to go through a "play-off" to get into the LHUSOC. This is much better.
My only objection is that a D2 team and a D3 team can't play each other until the Fourth Round, and they will each have to beat an MLS team (in the 3rd round) to get there. But that's only because there aren't enough D2/D3 teams yet. When (if) the lower leagues can grow enough and have some stability, the numbers will allow D2/D3 to play against each other in the "regional" rounds.

| FCD jumps into this in the third round on May 29th +/- but........................
there is a local team involved from first round...........this team has been playing in NTPSA the past two seasons and is DAMN good. Hope they make it past El Paso because they would host the next round at Richland College.
FIRST ROUND – Tuesday, May 15 NTX Rayados (USASA) at El Paso Patriots (PDL): Patriots Stadium; El Paso, Texas; 8 p.m. MT
SECOND ROUND– Tuesday, May 22 Charlotte Eagles (USL PRO) at NTX Rayados (USASA): Richland College; Dallas, Texas; 8 p.m. CT

- (What did you make of the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal draw,
particularly seeing more scenarios where you'd have to play on the road?) "Obviously the coin is not favorable to us. It seems to land on the right side for K.C. and for D.C. United, whose president of one club and coach of the other (club) have been on the executive committee of U.S. Soccer -- surprisingly. Being very frank, I think U.S. Soccer is trying to make it difficult for us to win an Open Cup. It's almost like sometimes I get the feeling like they'd rather not see us win it again, for whatever reasons. Maybe they think it dilutes the value of the Cup or they're getting pressure from others that think Seattle can only win it because they're playing at home.
"All that I know is you compare us and D.C., I mean D.C. has played one away game since 2007. We've played a lot more away games with the second-division Sounders and first division. I know we were in Portland twice, just to think of that one. So it's just something that's there. I think they're making it difficult for us, but it's like, 'OK, they can throw obstacles in the way. We're going to try to jump over each of those hurdles,' and I think we can. And maybe it gives us an 'us against the world' mentality a little bit, because I really think that they would prefer for somebody else to win it."

| Tonight is the 3rd LHUSOC match I've attended this year.
This is probably a new record for me, as I don't recall FCD/Burn ever hosting more that 2 in one year (before 2007, when I moved to San Antonio).

- The U.S. Open Cup has had its share of surprises this year, but
mostly MLS teams remain as the tournament heads into its quarterfinals stage.
Still, there is a trio of underdogs from third division USL Pro that remain. And they are hoping to keep their dreams of lifting the Open Cup trophy alive next Tuesday when they go on the road to take on more talented MLS teams.
The Harrisburg City Islanders, Charlotte Eagles and Dayton Dutch Lions will be aiming to advance to the semifinals next week, but they all have difficult matches ahead of them in order to make that happen.
