Losing 4-2 to Mexico in the Gold Cup final was the best thing that could have happened to the United States men's national soccer team. It's time for the USMNT and its fans to grow up and realize that progress is not measured by narrow victories over Central American countries or avoiding embarrassment at the World Cup. The solution to what's wrong with the team is bigger than putting Jonathan Bornstein on a slow boat to Honduras. It's even bigger than firing Bob Bradley.

Brek Shea. FC Dallas' left-sided midfielder is precisely the kind of player Klinsmann covets. Shea, 21, is having an outstanding campaign in Dallas, brimming with confidence and begging to stretch those long legs along the outside channel. Indeed, he has a little Lukas Podolski in him, always looking to run by defenders or to uncork that big left foot. (And look how well a young Podolski did for Klinsmann during that World Cup third-place finish five years back.) Shea's international debut last year was a clunker; he looked nervous and unsure. Klinsmann is a motivator and confidence builder who will encourage Shea to put all that behind him.

CHICAGO – U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea and defender Zach Loyd to a squad of 24 players to prepare for the upcoming friendlies against Costa Rica and Belgium.
“We are excited to be one of only two MLS teams to have multiple players called into U.S. National Team camp,” FC Dallas President and CEO Doug Quinn said. “Both Brek and Zach are deserving of this honor, having displayed the ability to excel at the MLS level. I am sure they will continue that success on the international stage.”
The U.S. first hosts Costa Rica on Sept. 2 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3.com and Galavision. Four days later, coverage from King Baudouin Stadium begins at 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN and ESPN3.com.
“We are excited to get the group back together and to see some fresh new faces,” said Klinsmann. “We will continue to get to know the players and gather some valuable information during our 10 days together. Hopefully we can continue where we left off from the game against Mexico.”
Many of the players from the 1-1 draw against Mexico on Aug. 10 in Philadelphia return for their second camp under Klinsmann. FC Dallas’ Shea entered that match in the 60th minute, instantly shifting the momentum in favor of the U.S.
Loyd, who was called into replace defender Timmy Chandler for the match against Mexico, was the fifth pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Loyd has played in 24 games for FC Dallas this season, scoring once and adding three assists for the defending Western Conference Champions. He made his international debut on Jan. 22 against Chile, starting and going 72 minutes in the 1-1 draw.

"When we have an 18-, 19-year-old here in MLS who is an exceptional talent, then we expect from him to already be a senior national team player and to score goals like Agudelo," Klinsmann said. "This is wrong. Yes, we identify a Brek Shea and an Agudelo and youngsters like that, but at the same time, we have to be realistic and say, 'You know what? At his age, this is what we can expect from that kid.' And we're not expecting Juan Agudelo to come into the national team and score every time he plays or perform at the highest international level because we only want to see him step-by-step develop."

ussoccer.com: Was there ever any doubt you wanted to keep playing for the U.S. National Team? TC: “No. Some people were saying I wanted to play for Germany, but I've always wanted to play for the U.S. team. I'm with the ‘A’ team for the USA, and I want to keep playing. No question about it.”
