U.S. Men’s National Team defender Tim Ream made his Bolton Wanderers debut on Saturday as Bolton topped Millwall 2-0 in FA Cup play to advance to the quarterfinals. Bolton will play Wednesday’s Stevenage/Tottenham winner on March 17.
Ream played the full 90 minutes at center back as Bolton shut out a Millwall side that placed four shots on goal. Bolton netted a fourth-minute goal and never looked back.
Samir Badr is home in Fairfax, uncertain what his future holds in Egypt’s suspended soccer league.
Badr, a 19-year-old goalkeeper, signed a long-term contract with league leader Haras El-Hodood in January – just nine days before [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Badr was pegged to start his first match sometime this month, but with the league on hold through a mourning period that lasts until March 15, he and his teammates were given time off before regrouping in Cairo next weekend.

SI.com: One very minor quibble. Your goal celebrations aren't as creative as they were in your MLS days. What happened?
Dempsey: (laughs) I guess you could say it was more a happy, joking-around kind of time. I couldn't believe I was playing professionally and was having fun with it. I used to be doing jokes and putting on hats and doing fishing celebrations, that kind of stuff. But when it got to scoring in a World Cup and being able to score in the Premier League, it was more accomplishing goals, really doing something special. Not to take away from the goals I scored in MLS, but now it's a business. I went through some tough times going through all those coaches [at Fulham] and having to prove myself. It was like: I'm here, I am good enough, I should be playing. That's all it was in my celebrations. A lot of times people think I look like I'm angry. But I'm just getting all that pressure out. It's a release.
Clint Dempsey does it again, scoring twice for Fulham in a 5-0 victory over Wolves in an English Premier League match. He now has 12 goals in league play and 18 in all competitions.
Mirko Vucinic is not accustomed to battling superheroes. The Juventus forward’s selfishness in possession might make him a villain in the eyes of his own club’s supporters but it is hardly the sort of offence which catches the attention of mankind’s fictional protectors. As he advanced towards the edge of the Chievo penalty area somewhere around the 70-minute mark on Saturday night, it’s safe to assume the last thing he was expecting was a visit from Captain America.
And yet there he was, hurtling 40 yards across the pitch in the blink of an eye before taking Vucinic out with a tackle that was at once both ruthless and lawful. Michael Bradley might not carry a vibranium-steel alloy shield or turn up for work in a lycra bodysuit, but in moments like these it is easy to see why the people of Verona have taken to nicknaming him after the Marvel character. Steely-gazed and musclebound, he’s protected their defence from harm all season.
“What a player!” read the breathless verdict of Gazzetta dello Sport’s Mirko Graziano the following day. “He both destroys play and constructs it.” Simone Antolini, of the Verona-based Arena, could have told you that months ago. “Captain America does not want to wake up: his Italian dream continues,” he wrote on Monday. “More and more he looks like a key component of the Chievo midfield.”
The American midfielder tallied his fifth goal of the season Wednesday, opening the scoring in Anderlecht's 2-1 victory over Zulte-Waregem. The win wrapped up the regular season for Anderlecht, which finished atop the Belgium Pro League standings and will take a three-point advantage into the six-team league playoff hexagonal, where the top two finishers qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
When Kljestan headed home Lucas Biglia's corner kick in the seventh minute, he matched his career high for goals in a single season. Kljestan scored five times in the 2008 and 2009 regular seasons while playing for Chivas USA (and he did score another goal in the 2008 MLS playoffs).

Josh Gatt and Molde FK opened up the 2012 season with a 2-1 victory over Strømsgodset. Gatt started the game at RW in a 4-2-3-1, went the full 90 minutes and scored the second goal for Molde.

Jozy Altidore's quietly been having a tremendous year for Dutch Eredivisie team AZ Alkmaar with 18 goals on the campaign, helping to lead his squad to possible Europa League qualification. ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].)
Unfortunately, Altidore left yesterday's match with NEC Nijmegen early after being bumped by a defender and sliding across wet turf headfirst into the insipid signage that rings big-time stadium pitches. While he was originally reported to have suffered head and neck injuries after being knocked out, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Altidore has a "big bruise on his back" and his status for this Sunday's match is doubtful.
Jozy Altidore caught himself in mid-sentence and let out a laugh at what he had just said. The 22-year-old US national team striker realized for a second just how funny it was to talk about his younger years, as if he still wasn’t in the early stages of a career filled with so much promise.
Not everyone might see the humor in that, least of all people who have placed expectations on him since he turned professional at 16 and gave early glimpses of potential greatness. He was lighting up Major League Soccer with goals before he could even legally buy lottery tickets. He moved to Europe on a $10 million transfer at the age of 18, the same age when he scored a goal against the senior Mexican national team in his US national team debut. He started every game at the 2010 World Cup for the United States at age 20.
For those hoping to see Brian McBride return to the playing field, your wishes have come true.
McBride will be [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] during its quest to make a run at the FA Cup. The team, which is pairing a number of aging, retired, former standouts with its host of amateurs, is being funded by Budweiser, a lead sponsor of the FA Cup, and is also the subject of an England television documentary that will detail its efforts to pull off a shock cup run.
The 40-year-old McBride, who retired after the 2010 MLS season, will team with former Argentina star Claudio Caniggia and Arsenal stars Martin Keown and Ray Parlour, among others. Former England manager Terry Venables will be the team's technical director, while former England goalkeeper David Seaman will be the team's goalkeeping coach. McBride's Wembley FC debut is slated for Aug. 11, in a preliminary round FA Cup match.
American forward Charlie Davies is leaving French team Sochaux to sign a two-year contract with Danish club Randers.
Davies struggled to find playing time at Sochaux after returning from injuries suffered in an October 2009 car crash, and spent last year on loan with Major League Soccer's D.C. United. After the crash, he made just two appearances for the French club, both as a second-half substitute in February.
Davies said on Randers' website the deal "gives me a great chance to show I can be a success on European soil."

Unable to find any playing time at Tigres, Jonathan Bornstein hoped things would change with a move to Atlanta in Cancun, but the U.S. international will remain with Tigres in Monterrey after a loan deal reached in June fell apart when Atlante couldn't reach an agreement on paying Bornstein's salary.
Bornstein, 27, moved to Mexico in January 2011 but found time limited at Tigres, which has had one of the best backlines in Mexico.
The rebranded Mexican league kicks off Friday with a big season ahead for Yanks down south.
The first division in Mexico is now known as the Liga MX, while the second division is the Ascenso MX and a cup competition – the Copa MX – will be played midweek.
Nomenclature aside, there will be a lot of matches involving Americans over the coming months, with a good number hoping to force their way into the national team for that US vs. Mexico friendly in Mexico City on August 15 and then World Cup qualifying.
In the wake of Geoff Cameron's transfer from Houston Dynamo to Stoke City -- and here we should pause for a moment to celebrate yet another player moving from MLS to the big time -- there's been concern expressed that Stoke’s rather pedestrian system might stymie his progress.
Since taking over the U.S. national team a year ago, Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has stressed he wants all his players, and particularly the defenders, to be quicker and cleaner on the ball. By playing for a team on which the back line often thumps the ball upfield rather than passing it, so goes the theory, Cameron’s national-team prospects could be compromised.
Of greater concern is that Stoke -- which finished 14th of 20 teams last season -- be relegated, as in the case of Bolton and U.S. defender Tim Ream, whose talents on the ball are going to be less relevant in a cruder yet challenging level of play this season in the League Championship. Yet still he’ll be scrutinized mercilessly by fans and the press; performing in a highly charged environment is another facet of player development sometimes overlooked.
The U.S. Men's National Team forward scored two more goals today, both of the quality variety, in AZ Alkmaar's 3-1 win against Heracles. That gives him four in two matches, and gives him an outstanding start to the season.
Altidore didn't just score tap-in goals today. Both tallies were impressive plays that showed off his impressive range of qualities, as well as showing off the clear confidence he is playing with.
The link has video of both goals. Both were quite impressive.

There’s a lot to like about Robbie Rogers’ loan to Stevenage – but one fairly alarming element, too.
Rogers wasn’t in the plans at Leeds, apparently. He never really seemed to get a chance as injuries mucked up his time at Elland Road, but them’s the breaks, I suppose.
So his move to a place where he’s sure to get more playing time is the best part of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. He’ll be at the little ground dubbed Broadhall Way through January on loan, at least.

The Craven Cottage club have made an official complaint to the league authorities, accusing the Merseyside club of breaching rules by publicly declaring an interest in the American international.
They are unhappy that [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]’s media department reported comments from manager Brendan Rodgers about Dempsey. A website affiliated to Anfield’s American owners also mistakenly announced a deal was in place.
Liverpool made an inquiry for the 29 year-old last month but have not followed up with a bid and insist they have no further interest in the player. Dempsey has been left out of the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] squad since the start of the season, with Martin Jol blaming Liverpool for unsettling the forward.
